Our coin of the month is the superb Platinum Jubilee fifty pence which celebrates seventy years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. This coin marks the first time a royal event has been celebrated on a fifty pence. 

This coin is the first coin to deviate from the norm of having the Queen's portrait on the obverse - the "heads" side, and instead shows a full length figure of Elizabeth II on horseback (fun fact - her horse was named Winston). This a nostalgic depiction of the queen, reminiscent of her 25 pence crowns which were issues to celebrate her coronation as queen in 1953. She is mounted on horseback, dressed in her uniform as Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards and as worn by Her Majesty during the ceremony of Trooping the Colour. This design is contained with a garter with the inscription 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENCE' which translates as 'Shame on him who thinks evil of it', representing the emblem and motto of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, a chivalric order founded by King Edward III in 1348. Around the circumference is the inscription "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Realm" with the denomination 50 PENCE and dated 2022 below. Below the horses hind legs are the initials JB for the designer John Bergdahl. 

The remarkable reverse - "tails" side, features a large 70, inside the zero is a crowned ER II - the royal cypher of Elizabeth II, with the dates of her reign, 1952 - 2022 below. To the bottom of the coin are the initials AR DO for the design company Osborne Ross whose founders Andrew Ross and Deborah Osborne are responsible for the design. 

This coin, struck in cupro-nickel, is encapsulated with an accompanying booklet which looks back over the queen's previous jubilee celebrations.
